Lenses for Canon Eos 5D Mark II?
I am used to work a Canon EOS 60D with a Canon EF-S 18-200mm IS USM lens.
This one does not fit on the 5D, and no Canon EF 18-200mm exists.
Who has experience with a Sigma, Tamron or Vivitar 18-200mm with image stabilizer on a 5D?
Those alternative lenses will vignette (cut off the corners of the image) heavily on a 5D/5DmkII and are not recommended because, like your existing EF-s lens, they are designed specifically for crop-sensored cameras. Furthermore, the Vivitar is about as close to a trash lens as you can get. Sigma and Tamron are better than Vivitar by a mile but, there is a reason they remain cheaper than the Canon lens and it’s more than just the name. If you own or are thinking about buying a $2500 5D Mark II and then saddling it with one of these lenses to improve your images, you are about to make a huge and expensive mistake that will leave you disappointed.
FWIW, Canon in fact does make a lens for full-frame cameras that gives the full-frame cameras the same coverage as the EF-s 18-200mm on the crop-bodies like the 60D. The lens in question is the EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM. It is, like all the other telephoto zoom L-series lenses, a big white lens. It’s also fairly heavy and a “push-pull” zoom rather than a ring zoom as you are used to with the 18-200mm lens. Because of it’s size and bulk, this style of lens was never very popular with film SLR shooters back when it was first released. Some travel photographers use it if they place a premium on packing fewer lenses but, most pros won’t because optically speaking, it’s not one of Canon’s best inspite of it’s “L” series status.
I have both a 5D Mark II and a 7D. The 60D uses an imaging sensor that is nearly identical to othat of the 7D. Having used both the EF-s 18-200mm on my 7D and the EF 28-300mm IS L-series on my 5DmkII, I can tell you with great confidence that there isn’t much of an improvement to be had in spending over $5,000 for the 5D/28-300mm setup versus your 60D with an 18-200mm lens. In fact, beyond the fact it’s full-frame, the 5D Mark II really doesn’t offer anything beyond the capabilities of the 60D. I would argue the only reason to upgrade to the 5D Mark II is the fact it’s full-frame and makes full use of ultra wide-angle lenses like the EF 14mm f/2.8L II. But even that capability isn’t necessarily sufficient reason to upgrade now that Sigma produces their 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM zoom for Canon’s EF/EF-s mount.
